Shangri-la is a three-day event comprised of two major parts: a music festival and a LGBTQ+ pride parade. Located in Honolulu, HI, a portion of the proceeds from Shangri-la will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign in support of the LGBTQ+ community and their assimilation and recognition into society.
This project was created using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and inDesign. Shangri-la's website was coded using HTML and CSS on Brackets.
Mission
I personally did not see a visible and strong LGBTQ+ community growing up in Hawai'i despite knowing quite a few people who identified as being gay. As I moved into high school and college, I noticed O'ahu slowly became a destination for many high-profile artists and EDM DJ's to hold music events at and I decided that Shangri-la would be one of those events but is in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
Design Process
I wanted Shangri-la's visuals to maintain a tropical aesthetic sans the typical beach hues of green and blue. I took to portraits of Hawaiian royalty for the color palette. Shangri-la's target audience was of course all young adults and so I looked at the doodle-like styles of SZA's Ctrl, vintage postcards of Hawai'i, and the patterns done by Fitted Hawai'i. All these styles mirror the design trends of today and what I thought my own friends would appreciate.
I drew these on pen and paper then transferred it into Illustrator to create the logo and pattern throughout the website.
