2021 is an 8x11 softcover 62 page photo book telling my personal journey throughout the year.
This photobook was created with:
iPhone 12 and Fujifilm Instax mini 9 and 11 for photography
Adobe Bridge for media organization
Adobe Photoshop for photo editing and retouching
Adobe InDesign for layout and type
Procreate on iPad for illustrations and typography
Problem
A curated physical photo book serves as a solution to the disorganized never-ending collection of photos many people have in their smart phones nowadays. This project's design was created within 4 days.
Design Process
Media Selection and Preparation for Layout
Now, iOS has made navigating through the Photos app more user friendly by utilizing AI technology to identify subject matter in photos, geotagging to organize special events together, and an intuitive user interface so that important photos can be identified more efficiently.
Total photos taken in 2021: 3,388
Total photos pulled from Photos app: 530
Photos featured in Photobook: 209
Using Adobe Bridge, I was able to convert the photos from .HEIC to JPEG format. I also used the native Camera Raw software to do photo adjustments such as color temperature, lighting, and cropping.
Layout
Using the dimensions given to me by my manufacturer, I created a layout in InDesign and placed the photos into the spreads. Photos are further curated down to grouped together based on their context and visual cohesion.
Photos are then gridded based on the amount of photos on a page and the visual appearance of the spread as a whole. Captions are then added.
Illustration and Typography
Layout is exported using medium file settings for the purpose of being transferred to my iPad. Now, I use Procreate to create my illustrations that add a personable touch to each page.
Illustrations are drawn on a new layer so that it can be exported as a transparent file that can be imported back into InDesign.
